What does a first time gun owner need to know about gun safety.

Firearm Safety handling tips

We realize that in the last year and half alone the US has seen 5 to 8 million  new gun owners. This makes a lot of people concerned when it comes to gun safety practices which need to be followed in order to avoid negligent discharges.

The answer is simple, TRAINING is key to proper safety practices and gun handling as a whole. Here is what you need to know.

Treat every gun as if its loaded

1) pull the gun out of the box it came in

2) keeping your finger off the trigger and rest it above on the frame of the gun

3) point it in a safe direction

4) check that its clear and safe by taking the magazine out of the magwell and racking the slide a few times while visually inspecting the chamber for any live ammo that may be stuck inside,

here is what an empty chaber looks like

at this point your weapon is safe and clear providing that the magazine is out and the chamber is clear of any live or spent rounds.

5) put the gun down

6) load your live ammo into your magazine

7) pick up the gun again and point it in a safe direction while keeping your finger off the trigger and resting your finger on the frame above

8) load the magazine with live ammo into the magwell of the gun (hint/ tip: make sure it sits and clicks in well)

9) rack the slide back and let go, this will load a round into the chamber.

Now you are locked and loaded. The Weapon is now considered HOT.  This means if you press the trigger the gun will fire. Go easy there tiger.

(tip: at this point some people will take the magazine out and add another round to make sure that the magazine is full and you now have a round in the chamber of the gun and a full magazine which people refer to as 10+1  which means 10 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber.) Magazine sizes vary based on guns and state laws so it can be 15+1 or 17+1 or 7+1

10) put the gun in the holster. Make sure there is nothing obstructing this action. (clothing, your own hand or fingers, and more )

Remember these basic practices will keep you safe.
